The history of photography in Montpellier: a lecture at the Domaine de Pierresvives on 15 October 2026
On Thursday 15 October 2026, from 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm, the Pierresvives Departmental Estate in Montpellier will host the lecture ‘The History of Photography’, as part of the ‘History Thursdays’ series organised by the Hérault Departmental Archives. This event, which is free and open to all, will take place in the Pierresvives amphitheatre, at the junction of the La Paillade, Malbosc and Alco neighbourhoods.
Hosted by Luce Lebart, a photography historian and artistic director of the Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier, this lecture traces the key stages in the evolution of the photographic process, from its invention in the 19th century to its contemporary uses. It forms part of a rich cultural programme – combining exhibitions, lectures, film screenings and workshops – organised by the Domaine départemental Pierresvives.

An evening to explore the evolution of photography
This evening event is aimed both at enthusiasts of history, art and culture and at anyone curious to gain a better understanding of the impact of photography on our relationship with the world and with memory. Admission is free, and the venue is accessible to people with reduced mobility, making the event accessible to all.
